Choosing the right smartphone can feel overwhelming with so many options available. Learn how to feel confident buying a new phone with our handy guide.
What are the main factors to think about when choosing a mobile phone?
To get started, think about what you’ll be mostly using your phone for. For example, it might include:
- Staying connected with loved ones via video calls or WhatsApp
- Taking photos
- Online shopping or banking
- Keeping children or grandchildren entertained
Key things to consider before buying a new phone
Screen Size
Smartphones range from 4.7 inches to 7 inches, so think about what size of screen (and therefore handset) is right for you.
Larger screens are great for watching videos or typing, but they can be heavier and harder to fit in a pocket.
Smaller phones are easier to carry around but they may lack some of the more advanced features, like higher quality cameras and better battery life.
Storage
Your phone’s storage refers to how much space you have on it to save your photos, download and use different apps like social media sites and banking apps, and music.
The Apple iPhone, for instance, range from 64GB to 1TB but don’t allow you to increase your storage.
Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy, often let you add more storage via a memory card, making them more flexible.
If you take a lot of photos and download lots of different apps, having a higher storage capacity is important – I always encourage people to go for more storage if possible.
Operating systems
There are two main smartphone ‘operating systems’, which refers to the software that allows them to run:
- iOS (Apple’s operating system): Known for its simplicity and long-term updates (up to 6 years), iPhones are easy to use and link together to other Apple devices like iPads and Macs.
- Android (Google’s operating system): Used by brands like Samsung, Huawei, and OnePlus, Android offers more choice in phone styles and prices.
Budget
Smartphones vary in price, from pocket-friendly models starting at around £100 to the newest models that can be more £1,500.
Decide on your budget and weigh up the benefits of buying new, used, or refurbished.
Brand loyalty
Some people like to stick to a single brand they’re already familiar with for convenience.
For example, if you’re already an Apple user because you have an iPad, you may prefer iPhones because they can connect up easily with your tablet or even your Apple Watch.
